| Surfers claim that surfing in Costa Rica is the some of the best in the world. There are 755 miles of coastline on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. There are numerous breaks and the surfing locations include idyllic beaches and coral platforms where the waves are almost like a pipeline. Usually there is surf breaking on both coasts, but if one side is calm the other is bound to be breaking.
When you are surfing in Costa Rica, you dont need to wear a wet suit because of the warm water temperatures. The Pacific coast has more surfing opportunities because it is much larger than the Caribbean coast. The best breaks are found in Guanacaste, in the northwest, but the Central and Southern zones also have excellent surfing locations. The best spots are:
Pacific
Guanacaste Potrero Grande- located in the Santa Rosa National Park. This area can only be reached by boat and no camping is permitted in the area. Playa Naranjo also located in the Santa Rosa National Park. You need a four-wheel drive if you want to drive to this beach or you can access it by boat. Camping is permitted here. Playa Grande located north of Tamarindo, it has consistent breaks for surfing in Costa Rica. Tamarindo this is an excellent surfing location, but is also a good base for surfing the nearby beaches. Nosara this area has several beach breaks and is located near accommodations

Caribbean
Puerto Viejo coral reef area, with plenty of hotels and restaurants Manzanillo this area is only good when the breaks are big, but there are plenty of accommodations in the area.
