| San Jose, Costa Rica is the capital of this small country in Central America. It is located in the San Jose province, which has just about every possible climate because this province extends from the central Pacific coast to Mt. Chirripo, the highest mountain peak in the country. Visitors to this province can experience a whole range of temperatures and rainfall patterns.
When visiting San Jose, Costa Rica a light jacket and umbrella will provide you with protection from the weather. The region lies between 700 and 1300 meters above sea level and is the most heavily populated of the seven provinces in Costa Rica. One of the first areas to be settled was the Aserri Valley, just south of the city of San Jose. In 1736, the inhabitants were ordered to leave the area and move to Boca del Monte. They erected a church, which they dedicated to Saint Joseph San Jose. The parish became known as San Jose de la Boca del Monte en el Valle de Aserri. The residents refused to move to the new site because of a lack of water in the area surrounding the church. Water was later piped to the area and the residents did not move there until they were forced.
In 1823, the city of San Jose was named the capital of the newly independent country. Today, San Jose, Costa Rica, is the hub of everything that takes place in the country. It is the first place that tourists visit because of the international airport. The entire valley, located between three volcanoes, surrounding the city has a population of about 1.2 million people. There are many hotels, restaurants and parks for visitors and the people are really friendly. The layout of the city is a grid system and the local people rely on landmarks rather than street names when moving around the city. If you get lost, all you have to do is find a local church, because every church faces west. The people are also eager to provide you with any directions you need.
