If you intend to rent a car during your visit to Costarica, you should not have any difficulty. Anyone with a drivers licence can drive in this country provided they have not been there for more than 90 days. If you intend to stay longer you can obtain a Costa Rican drivers licence very easily.

Just as in other parts of the world, tourists to Costarica should use common sense when travelling and follow simple guidelines when travelling throughout the country. Tourists are often seen as being wealthy by the poorer people and some of these people may just be looking for a chance to rob you. These guidelines include:

Always be aware of what is going on around you. Dont worry that you may be perceived as watching others because you need to pay attention for your own protection.
Do not stop and get out if your vehicle is bumped from behind. This is one of the tricks used by bandits in South and Central America.
Only pull over for emergency vehicles and the police.
Try to find a public place to ask for directions is you get lost.
Always park your vehicle in well-lit areas and keep everything locked in the trunk.

Do not take these guidelines to mean that Costarica is a dangerous place. It isnt, but you have to watch the areas you choose to visit and never leave yourself open to the possibility of being mugged or attacked.

Costarica is a beautiful country and a wonderful place to see the tropics in a friendly environment. In fact the Costa Rican people are known for their friendliness and generosity. The native people call themselves Ticans and it is common for them to approach tourists and ask where they are from. This is nothing to be alarmed about as you will soon learn that there is always time to have a chat in Costa Rica.
