Costa Rica is a very small country in Central America. It has been called the jewel of the Caribbean and the Switzerland of the Americas because of its breathtaking scenery. The country is bordered by both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, but the Caribbean side of the country offers more cultural diversity. A lot of development on the Pacific Coast side has been slow because of the many national parks and wildlife reserves located there.

The culture of Costa Rica was virtually erased by the European settlers. They economy was basically a subsistence one based on agriculture and it is only in the last century that culture has become important to the people of the country. Almost all Costa Ricans are Catholic, but there are small communities of Jewish people and evangelical Christians. The main language is Spanish, but most people do understand English in the areas frequented by tourists. Most of the Costa Rican black people speak a dialect of English called Creole, and those who live in isolated areas speak Bribri.

You can drive to Costa Rica from the United States, but you have to drive through Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. It is not recommended unless you have lots of time and can speak Spanish fluently. International flights land at the airport in San Jose, with connections to major
cities in the United States and Canada and several Latin and South American cities. There are plenty of tour group companies operating in Costa Rica at prices somewhat cheaper than those operating in North America.
