| When planning Costa Rica vacations, there is certain information that travellers do need to have. They need to have a valid passport before they can enter the country. When they arrive they will receive a 90-day tourist visa. In order to remain longer than 90 days, they have to leave the country before the expiry date and after 72 hours they can return and receive another tourist visa. Tourists from countries other than Canada or the United States should contact the Costa Rican embassy in their home country to receive information because visitors from some countries are only permitted to stay for 30 days.
Tourists should carry U.S. currency with them on Costa Rica vacations. This currency is accepted in the country and gives you the best exchange rate. Credit cards are accepted some stores and hotels only accept Visa but the credit card charges on transactions in Costa Rica are very high. It is best to use cash for your purchases. Travellers cheques are also accepted, but a commission fee of between 2 and 5% is charged for changing them.
Costa Rica vacations do not require tourists to purchase any adaptors to use electrical appliances, such as razors or hair dryers. There is no need to take medication against malaria when travelling to Costa Rica, but this is up to the individual. It is recommended that tourists bring plenty of insect repellent to avoid contacting dengue virus. Mosquitoes carry this disease, but there is no vaccination for it. The mosquitoes are prevalent in crowded areas during the daytime, which could be any of the tourist destinations.
It is easy to fly to most locations within the country, so this can be a consideration when planning Costa Rica vacations. There are two domestic airlines, but it is often difficult to get a seat unless you book in advance. There are many buses operating in San Jose, but it may be difficult to get public transportation to other areas. There are many taxis and car rental agencies, but renting a car could cost over $300 per week.
