Costa Rica beaches are a veritable paradise. There is a never ending variety of beaches on 1800 miles of coastline that borders both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. There are both rocky and sandy beaches with all colors of sand, ranging from the normal tan color to pink. The Nicova Peninsula is famous for its beaches, but there are riptides on these beaches especially at high tide. Swimmers should be careful when swimming on the beaches with high waves.

Some of the best Costa Rica beaches are:
* Playa Pan de Azcar great for those who want to have privacy on a beach. There are also islands with great snorkelling opportunities just offshore.
* Playa Brasilito the white sand beach of a charming little fishing village. The village has a hotel where tourists can stay as they enjoy this beach.
* Playa Conchal one of the most secluded beaches in Costa Rica. It is well worth a visit because of the tiny shells that make this beach famous.
* Playa Grande a turtle nesting area with restrictions for night visits to the ebach.
* Playa Avellanes one half mile long, this beach has 8 surfing locations, a river estuary and a mangrove swamp for birdwatchers. The sand is pale gold in color.
* Playa Negra some of the best surfing in Costa Rica can be found here. The beach is a combination of sand and outcroppings of rock.
* Playa Junquillal there are few buildings on this beach, which stretches for 3 km.
* Playa Carillo this is a reef-protected beach with many palm trees and a cliffs at the back.

There are two protected Costa Rica beaches. Las Baulas Marine National Park is home to the leatherback turtle and the beach is a reserve where these turtles can nest in peace. A certified local guide must accompany all visitors who come to this beach at night. Another protected beach is the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, which is a major nesting area for the Pacific Ridley turtles.
